Ingredients :

PIE IN CUPS, ingredients :

4 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp course salt
3 cups hot milk
1 tsp vanilla
gratings of nutmeg
3/4 cup chopped dates.
1 - 9 1/2” deep dish pie shell, or two 9” shallow pie shells.

Date custard pie is always a show stopper at family functions. Some people will shy away from it, thinking that they don’t like dates or custard... but once they try a piece, they will be all over you for the recipe!

Beat eggs slightly, add sugar and salt.
Slowly add milk to temper eggs, then add vanilla and nutmeg.
Spread dates over unbaked pie shell (s).
Pour custard mixture over dates.

Place pie in an oven pre-heated to 450º, turn down to 325º.
Cook until custard has set. 35-40 minutes for 9” shallow pies, 60 minutes for
9 1/2” deep dish pie.


Of course you don’t need to add the dates... then you will have a plain custard pie. All cooking times and other directions would remain the same.
